BANGKOK, (TNA) - The government today announced the launch of a major crackdown on prostitutes working in bars, massage parlors, or as freelancers, including popular nightlife joints like Patpong and lower Sukhumvit area, while urging the public to refrain from visiting these places and purchasing any services. Twinned with a programme to assist the victims of human trafficking, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security crackdown will begin on an unspecified date later this month.
Today the ministry convened a meeting with agencies, including the Royal Thai Police, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the Interior Ministry and the Labour Ministry, to announce plans for the sweeping move, which will begin in Bangkok before being extended to the rest of the country, including the infamous redlight districts of Pattaya and Phuket. The first crackdown led by troops of the Royal Thai Police will include infamous Soi Cowboy (Sukhumvit). Noting that prostitution is illegal in Thailand, Mr. Wanlop Phloytabtim, the ministry's permanent secretary, advised tourists and locals to stay away from these areas until the campaign is finished.
Mr. Wanlop Phloytabtim told delegates that the focus of the crackdown would be on the heads of prostitution 'mafias' who controlled teams of female prostitutes from poor villages of rural areas.
The prostitutes themselves would be offered social accommodation and skills training if they are Thai nationals, but would be repatriated if they are foreign nationals, he said, adding that the government would work with the countries concerned to ensure that the prostitutes did not return to Thailand.
The government hopes that by appealing to the public to refrain from visiting bars and massage parlors, or purchasing services from prostitutes, it will be able to successfully slash through prostitution rings. (TNA)
